The Monstrous Morals
In class today we discussed whether or not it was morally wrong for Dr. Frankenstien to create life. I wanted to continue this discussion since we had to end it abruptly in class. I believe that it is morally wrong to create life, because in a since we are playing God, which is a power no man should have. Also, I don't think it is morally acceptable because Dr. Frankenstien was stealing the body parts, which is perverse in its own right. Overall, I just believe it is morally unacceptable for a human being to have the power of God, i.e. creating life.

I agree with you about how it was morally wrong for Dr. Frankenstein to create the creature the way that he did, using stolen body parts and various other aspects of the human body to form the creature. I am merely questioning, but we as humans do in fact create life through sexual reproduction. How is this different then from what Dr. Frankenstein did? We (humans and Dr. Frankenstein) create life, but in our own separate ways. Are we playing God by creating life? Note: I am merely playing devil's advocate and I hope that I am not insulting anyone's religious views because that is not my intention
ReplyDeleteLearning to give life to some previously DEAD tissue is the difference there. Having a baby by sexual reproduction for humans is normal (and by normal I mean how God intended, if you believe in God). I agree with you guys... not only is it rather disgusting to sew together a ragdoll of a human being, the actual deed of giving life to dead tissue is something that humans aren't meant to have.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that we want to do powerful things like create life and use stem cell research to change the world, yet we can't even play nicely with other countries and cure the problems of war, famine, disease, poverty, et cetera, et cetera.
I'm really undecided on whether or not it is immoral that Frankenstein created his monster. I believe God is not the role for man to fill. From the text, I think that before his success he expected to be worshiped by his creations. (Not trying to be Jesus pushing, but) This is a privilege only God is entitled to. God's reasoning for our creation is incomprehensible to our minds; so it seems we should steer from this idea. However, was it not God who gave us the power to create? Not only through procreation but by technological means as well. Computers, artificial intelligence, and stem cell research are all examples of how we are supposedly "playing God." All these can be considered immoral when placed in certain societies, but then the morality of the monster cannot be decided.
ReplyDeleteYes, we have the power to create and use tools, otherwise we would be little better than most other animals, and God does give human beings power over all animals in the Bible. However, I think the real issue is with creating life, which makes Frankenstein's experiments so immoral. There is a big difference between creating tools to control other species already there and creating new species. I believe when we have reached the point where our creations are able to create for themselves, then we have gone too far.
